20ft swells close Pismo pier

The Pismo Pier was closed Sunday at around 1 p.m. by Pismo Beach Police as a precaution due to a high surf, which climbed the beach to the bottom of base of the pier.

“We're expecting 20 foot swells this afternoon,” police Sgt. Mark Miller said Sunday at about 4:30.

He expected the pier to stay closed through the night, but said the night crew would monitor wave activity and make decisions based on reports.

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory Sunday for Pismo Beach through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The services reported a strong storm moving off the Northern coast at around noon that “has generated a very large westerly swell.”

A very large surf up to 25 feet was predicted for the Central Coast, peaking later in the afternoon and evening with strong rip currents expected through Tuesday, the NWS forecast.

“This surf event will peak later this afternoon and evening,” the NWS stated in the advisory, “but the surf will continue to remain high into early Tuesday morning.”

The NWS reported scattered showers, with a steady temperature around 52 and west winds around 15 mph for the Pismo Beach area, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation.

Today's forecast is for sunshine with a high near 61 and calm wind becoming north northwest between 10 and 13 mph, according to the NWS.

A high of 60 was forecast today for Santa Maria.

The week-long rain and wind pattern is expected to clear up Tuesday with sunshine and a 68 degree high, according the NWS.

More sunshine is expected into the week, with some clouds predicted Thursday, the NWS forecast.

Cold Surf, Ice cream head ache, No crowds

Hey all,
After surfing a few little beachies up from the sunshine coast the past few days here in Australia, and pretty much getting skunked, i started to daydream about the waves at my local in Sendai Japan, I comforted myself by dreaming of flat
windblown knee high waves, with a beach full of snow. I mean even with 2-3ft onshore beachies here i was definately better off than slogging it out in a crowded icy cold line-up back in Japan right...WRONG! check out the pic i found!
YEP THATS SNOW ALL OVER THAT SAND!
